Great Depression of 1929 - Causes, impact and measures taken. Impact on India

The economic depression of early 1930's was one of the most important events of the world between the two wars. It is called 'Great' as it adversely affected almost all the great countries of the world except USSR. The Great Depression which began in USA extremely affected the European countries

Causes
-The main cause of the depression was the collapse of American share market. The share market collapse was due to speculation on borrowed money.

-Bank Failures-:Bank deposits were uninsured and thus as banks failed people simply lost their savings.

-Reduction in Purchasing Across the Board

-American Economic Policy with Europe

-Drought Conditions in Mississippi Valley in 1930

In 1929 Herbert Hoover became the President of America. During his period the share market reached its zenith. Share market was the greatest craze in America. People from all walks of life bought shares not for the dividend but for resale value .By that they wanted to become rich quickly.
"The Great Depression" began on Oct 24, 1929 with the fall in the prices of shares.
It created panic and people began to sell their shares speedily which led to a further fall. This was followed by the failure of banks which led to the non-availability of credit which affected industrial growth and agricultural produce.

French Revolution - World History

The French Revolution
On 14 July 1789 a furious, hungry mob attacked theBastille prison in the centre of Paris. They surged into the prison, liberating four bewildered counterfeiters, an aristocrat accused of debauchery and two mad men. There were no other prisoners. Then they turned their attention to destroying the hated building to which so many ordinary people had been committed without trial. Then the angry tide swept throughout Paris. Soon the severed heads of feeble assistants and commandant of the royal-fortress prison swayed from the rebels pikes.
Twenty kilometres away at Versailles,King Louis XVI slept in tranquility. When awakened with news of the disturbances, a perplexed Louis asked,"Is it a revolt?""No sire," came the reply,"it is a revolution".
The storming of the Bastille marked the beginning of a bloody revolution which completely demolished the foundations on which the 800 years of French monarchy rested. It was a revolution in which the down-trodden common man demanded from the absolute monarch his right to'Liberty, Equality and Fraternity'. It was a revolution that cost the king his power, then his throne, then his liberty, and finally his life.

The causes of the revolution ran deep. Years of religious persecution, arrest and imprisonment without trial, arbitrary taxation and near starvation had driven the deprived masses to take this extreme step. Their stomachs and pockets were empty but their minds were fed by the thoughts and ideals propagated by the French philosophers like Voltaire and Rousseau. Also, contributing greatly to their morale was the recent example of the American revolution.

The Rohilla War (A.D. 1774)

The Rohillas were Afghans and were frequently attacked by the Marathas. They sought the help of the Nawab Oudh to subdue the Marathas. The Nawab demanded Rs.40 lakhs and the Rohillas accepted the demand. When the Marathas appeared in Rohilkhand in 1773, they saw the forces of Nawab of Oudh behind the Rohillas, so the Marathas retreated without fighting Shuja-ud-daulah. The Nawab of Oudh demanded the promised 40 lakhs from the Rohillas. The Rohilla Chief refused to pay the money. The Nawab of Oudh approached the English for help. He even agreed to pay 40 lakhs to the British. So warren Hastings send an army against the Rohillas. Rohillas were defeated and their territory was annexed to Oudh.

LORD CORNWALLIS (A.D. 1786 - A.D. 1793) & His major reforms

LORD CORNWALLIS (A.D. 1786 - A.D. 1793)
Lord Cornwallis became the Governor General of India in 1786. He tried to follow the policy of non-intervention.In 1793, Cornwallis introduced the Permanent Settlement of Bengal. The Zamindars were required to pay a fixed amount in cash on a fixed date as land revenue to the treasury, irrespective of what they could collect. Slowly the Zamindars brought more areas under cultivation and made more money while they paid the same fixed amount to the company. Many Zamindars benefited more than either the company or the peasants.
Merits
This system was beneficial to the Zamindars. They were the owners of the lands and they became very loyal to the company. This system secured a fixed and stable income for the company. This settlement avoided the evils of periodical settlements.
Demerits
1)            Zamindars became the masters of the land and were benefited.
2)            The worst affected people were the cultivators who were left at the mercy of the zamindars.
3)            To meet the increasing expenses the government had to increase the tax in other provinces.
4)            The government had no direct contact with the people.
