White spirit - Chemical name and its uses

White spirit or mineral spirits (US), also known as mineral turpentine, turpentine substitute, petroleum spirits, solvent naphtha (petroleum) or Stoddard solvent, is a petroleum-derived clear, transparent liquid which is a common organic solvent used in painting and decorating.

White spirit is used as an extraction solvent, as a degreasing solvent, as a cleaning solvent and as a solvent in paints, aerosols, wood preservatives, varnishes, lacquers, and asphalt products. In households, white spirit is normally used to clean paint brushes after decorating. It is a mixture of saturated alicyclic and aliphatic hydrocarbons.
