Aakash -- "proudly made in India" -- and the base version
(meant for students) were launched on October 5 2011. It is manufactured by the
India-based company Quad, at a new production centre in Hyderabad.
The
tablets would be distributed with an aim to make rural students aware about the
use of technology in present day education. Serious delays and a row over
money have since put paid to that figure, while the Indian government later
admitted to being disappointed with the quality of the original Aakash tablet.
The second version subsequently arrived in November with a better processor,
more RAM and an improved LCD display.
Aakash 4 Tablet Features:
- Aakash IV, will run the latest version of Ubuntu alongside Google’s Android operating system.
- GB DDR3 SDRAM, 4GB integrated internal storage, the ability to have a micro SD card 2.0 interface and a 7 inch LCD display with at least 800x400 resolution.
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
- Aakash IV will be dual bootable (through an external SD card) with the latest GNU/Linux distribution (latest Ubuntu).
