The total population of the state as per the 2011 census is
8,45,80,777, of which 50.18 per cent is male and 49.82 per cent female.
The rural population is 5,63,61,702 (66.64 pc) and the urban population
2,82,19,075 (33.36 pc). The proportion of urban population increased
from 30.80 per cent in 2001 to 33.36 percent in 2011. Among the
districts the most populated is Ranga Reddy (52,96,741) and the lowest
is Vizianagaram (23,44,474). Among the mandals the most populated i s Vi
jayawada Urban (10,21,806). There are three cities in the state that
has a million plus population _ Greater Hyderabad (67,31,790),
Visakhapatnam (17,28,128) and Vijayawada (10,34,358). The Primary Census
Abstract (PCA) for the state up to village/town/ward was released by
director of census operations (Andhra Pradesh) YV Anuradha.
Rise in SC, ST Population
The SC population in the state was recorded as 1,38,78,078 with a decade’s growth rate of 12.47. The proportion of SC population was 16.41 percent in 2011 as against 16.19 percent in 2001. Prakasam district has the highest number (7,87,861) of SCs and Hyderabad the lowest (2,47,927), The SC population in Hyderabad went down from 3,07,248 in 2001. At the mandal level, Vijayawada Urban in Krishna district has the highest number of SCs (98,643). The Scheduled Tribes population too has increased from 50,24,104 in 2001 to 59,18,073 in 2011. The decade’s growth rate was 17.79 percent and now the ST population is 7 percent, while it was 6.59 in 2001. Khammam district with 27.37 percent has the highest proportion of ST population in the state and Hyderabad the lowest with 1.24 percent. Of the top 10 mandals in the state with highest ST population, except for Seethampet which is in Srikakulam district, all others (Chintapalle, GK Veedhi, Araku, G Madugula, Peda Bayalu, Hukumpeta, Paderu, Dumbirguda and Munching Puttu) are in Visakhapatnam district.
One of 5 Least Literate States
The state, which has taken several measures in the past decade to improve the literacy rate, seems to have fallen short of the target as it figures among the bottom five states in literacy rate. The literacy rate in the state is 67.02 percent, with 60.45 percent in rural and 80.09 percent in urban areas. In 2001, it was 60.47 percent, which means the increase is a mere 6.55 percent in one decade. Though the male-female gap in the literacy rate has decreased from 19.89 percent (2001) to 15.73 (2011), it is not reflected in the case of some districts like Kadapa, where the gap is highest with 21.01 percent. On the other hand, West Godavari district has the lowest gap with 6.56 percent. Among mandals Himayatnagar in Hyderabad district has the highest literacy rate (88.64 pc) and Kosigi in Kurnool district the lowest (33.95 pc).
Child Sex Ratio is on Decline
As against 919 at the national level, the child sex ratio in the state is 939, which is nothing to sing about. In all the rural areas, the ratio is on the decline and in the case of urban areas only two districts, Nizamabad and Medak, registered an increase. The highest child sex ratio is in East Godavari district (968) and lowest in Hyderabad (914).
Child Population (up to 6 years)
The child population is 91,42,802 with 61,52,022 in rural areas and 29,90,780 in urban areas. The proportion of child population to the total population has declined from 13.35 in 2001 to 10.81 in 2011. Even the proportion of child population in all the 23 district has decreased.
Population, Sex Ratio
The sex ratio increased from 978 in 2001 to 993 in 2011. Nizamabad district, with 1,040 women for every 1,000 men, has the highest sex ratio and Hyderabad with 954 has the lowest. Details pertaining to transgenders, the disabled and subcategory-wise details among SC, ST population will be released in due course.
