The current series of banknotes (which began in 1996) is known as the Mahatma Gandhi series.

Coins:
Coins minted at: Mumbai, Kolkatta(Alipore), Noida, Hyderabad(Saifabad & Cherlapally)
The oldest mint factories in India are located in Kolkata and Mumbai. Both the branches were established in 1859 by British administration.

Hyderabad mint factory was established in 1903 by the Nizam of Hyderabad. Indian government took over the factory in 1950. The Noida mint factory was established in 1986. The factory commenced minting stainless steel coins in 1988.

Under The Coinage Act, 1906, the Government of India is charged with the responsibility of the production and supply of coins to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

Denominations

Coins in India are presently being issued in denominations of 10 paise, 20 paise, 25 paise, 50 paise, one rupee, two rupees and five rupees. Coins upto 50 paise are called 'small coins' and coins of Rupee one and above are called 'Rupee Coins'. Coins can be issued up to the denomination of Rs.1000 as per the Coinage Act, 1906.
