The supporting legislation AP Bangaru Thali Girl Child Promotion and Empowerment Act, 2013 was passed on June 19, 2013 in Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly.

About the Programme
Bangaru Thalli is meant to take care of the girl child in every household from her birth till she completes her graduation.
Reasons to setup programme:
Citing rampant female foeticide as a cause for the dismal child sex ratio, Mr. Kiran Kumar Reddy said while one crore girl children were killed in the last 20 years in the country either in the womb itself or after their birth, in the State, the number during 2005- 2011 was estimated to be 78,000.

Objective: To ensure that every girl child born in the families of white card holders should become a graduate so that they can become a teacher or bank employee or even join the civil services.
Criteria:
  • Unveiled by chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy for the welfare of the girl child
  • belonging to poor families and having white ration cards
  • The scheme will be applicable to two girl children of each family.
  • The benefits under this scheme will be provided irrespective of them being beneficiaries of the other schemes being implemented for the welfare of the girl child in the state

 -The state government will give Rs 1,000 every month to every pregnant woman the moment she conceives till she delivers a baby.
- And if a girl child is born, the mother would be given Rs 2,500 at the time of delivery
- Rs 1,500 every year through Anganwadis till the girl turns 5 years.
- At the time of admission to school: Rs 1,000

- Rs 1,000 will be given every year for her studies from the first to the fifth standard
- Rs 2,500 from 6th  to 8th  standard
- Rs 3,000 for 9th  and 10th  standard
- Rs 3,500 each year for Intermediate(10+2)
- Rs 4,000 a year during her 3 year graduation.
- Rs 1 lakh will be given to the girl towards her marriage expenses soon after her graduation.
- If the girl discontinues her education with Intermediate, she will be given Rs 50,000 instead.
Totally the state would be spending about Rs 2.1 lakh towards the total education and marriage expenses of a girl.
