Asian Countries Top OECD’s PISA survey of Global Education

According to the Paris-based Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) latest survey report , which evaluates the knowledge and skills of the world’s 15-year-olds in 65 countries and has been released on 3 December. The OECD’s PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) 2012 tested more than 510,000 students in 65 countries and economies on maths, reading and science. The main focus was on maths.

Highlights of the Survey Report :-

* Asian nations cemented their top positions in an eagerly awaited report on global education , as their students continued to outshine western counterparts in maths, science and reading.

* Shanghai again ranked first in maths, science and reading .

* Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea rounded out the top five in maths skills.

*  Already strong performers in 2009, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Singapore continued to improve their performances in the three categories.

* The report highlighted Italy, Poland and Portugal for showing improvements in maths skills since the last survey ,but noted drops in Sweden and Finland.

* Peru ranked at the bottom of the list in all three categories.

* 23 per cent of students in OECD countries, and 32 per cent overall, failed to master the simplest maths problems.Boys performed better than girls in maths. They scored higher in 37 out of the 65 countries and economies, while girls outperformed boys in 5 countries.

* Across OECD countries, 8.4% of students are top performers in reading. Shanghai-China has the largest proportion of top performers – 25.1%. Over 15% of students in Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore are top performers in reading, as are more than 10% of students in Australia, Belgium, Canada, Finland, France, Ireland, Korea, Liechtenstein, New Zealand, Norway and Chinese Taipei.

Thailand’s PM Yingluck Shinawatra Dissolves Parliament

Thailand’s Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on 9 December formally dissolved the country’s parliament and called for new elections.The new elections are scheduled to take place on 2 February 2014.The members of the opposition party (Democrat Party) of Thailand resigned en masse from the Parliament on 8 December 2013 to protest a Government claimed by them as illegitimate.The opposition party of Thailand can’t work in the legislature anymore because the government is no longer accepted by the people. This will bring in a political crisis in the country.The opposition party has aligned with the anti-government protesters, who have staged the biggest rally of the country in the years. These demonstrations began in November 2013 and aims to oust Prime Minister of Thailand, Yingluck Shinawatra from the office.Yingluck Shinawatra won the elections in 2011. The opposition party Democrats has not won an election, since 1992. Democrat Party has won most of the seats on the Parliament in 1948, 1976 and 1992 but has never won an outright Parliamentary majority.

Taiwan and Singapore Signed Free Trade Agreement

Taiwan signed a free trade agreement with Singapore on 7 November in Taipei, the capital of Taiwan.It is first trade agreement Taiwan has signed with a member of the Association of Southeast Nations.Singapore is Taiwan’s fifth-largest trade partner and fourth-largest export market, with bilateral trade totalling US$28.2 billion in 2012.

U.S. named Nigeria’s Boko Haram ‘Terrorist’ Group

The US State Department has on 13 November officially designated Boko Haram, the Nigerian Islamist group responsible for the 2011 bombing of the UN headquarters in Abuja, as a “foreign terrorist organisation”. The designation is significant because it directs US law enforcement and regulatory agencies to block business and financial transactions with Boko Haram, which is fighting to impose Islamic law in northern Nigeria and has ties to al Qaeda. Boko Haram means “Western education is sacrilege”.

Abdullah Yameen Elected as President of Maldives

Abdulla Yameen, the candidate of Progressive Party , has been elected as president of the Maldives on 16 November .In the presidential election, Yameen defeated Mohamed Nasheed of Maldivian Democratic Party with a margin of six thousand votes.Yameen secured 51.39 percent (1 lakh 11 thousand) of votes, whereas Mohamed Nasheed received 48.61 (1 lakh 5 thousand votes).Yameen is an economist and the half-brother of Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, the former autocratic ruler, who ruled Maldives for 30 years.

Gambia Decided To Withdraw From The Commonwealth

The Gambia is on 2 October decided to withdraw from the Commonwealth, 48 years after joining. Gambian, a West African country joined the Commonwealth of Nations in 1965.The last country to be withdrawn from the Commonwealth group was Zimbabwe in 2003.The Commonwealth of Nations is a voluntary association of 54 countries, many of them former territories of the British Empire. It was established in 1949.

China and EU Signed Bilateral Currency Swap Agreement

China and the European Union signed a 350 billion yuan (45 billion euro) currency swap agreement on 10 October.The agreement signed between the People’s Bank of China and the European Central Bank (ECB), aims to support bilateral trade and protect financial stability.

US and Vietnam Signed Nuclear Trade Agreement

The US and Vietnam have on 10 October signed a agreement on civilian nuclear power that will allow american firms in to the market and commits the vietnamese to not producing ingredients for aotmic weapons.U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and his vietnamese counterpart signed the “123 agreement ” at the East Asian Summit in Brunei .

Tony Abbott is Australia’s new Prime Minister

Tony Abbott , Leader of the Liberal Party elected as the Prime Minister of Australia on 8 October.Liberal Party won the 44th Parliamentary elections. Liberal Party defeated the in-power Labor Party in the general elections held on 7 September 2013 to return back in power as the Liberal-National coalition for the first time in six years.With this win, Tony Abbott the leader of the Liberal-National Coalition will become the Prime Minister of the Country and successor of Kevin Rudd of the Labor Party.The coalition won 88 seats in the 150 seat Parliament. The ruling Labor Party was successful in winning 57 seats.

US and Russia Agreement on Removing Chemical Weapons on Syria

The United States and Russia have on 14 September agreed on a framework for removing chemical weapons from Syria .The break- through was announced after three day talks between the US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Geneva.The USA and Russia have agreed that Syria’s chemical weapons must be destroyed or removed by mid-2014. USA outlined a six-point framework under which Syria must hand over a full list of its stockpile within a week.

European Union Pledges 650 million euros To Somalia

The European Union has pledged 650 million euros ($868 million) in aid to Somalia to back a three-year reconstruction plan aimed at building on fragile security gains in the country.International donors met in Brussels on 16 September to approve Somalia’s “New Deal.”International donors pledged 1.8 billion euros for Somalia.

On 3 August Zanu-PF (Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front), the political party of the incumbent President Robert Mugabe has won the Presidential election of Zimbabwe .Mugabe won 61 percent of the vote against the 34 percent won by the Morgan Tsvangirai, the Prime Minister of Zimbabwe of Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) party.With this win, Mugabe has won his seventh term to the office of the President of Zimbabwe .Robert Mugabe is one of the leaders of the guerrilla movements against white-minority rule of Zimbabwe and was elected to power in 1980.

China Built Port Terminal Opens In Sri Lanka
On 5 August Sri Lanka’s President, Mahinda Rajapakse declared open the new International Container Terminal of the Colombo harbour.The $500 million Colombo International Container Terminal (CICT) was built by China Merchants Holdings.The new South Port is the only harbor in South Asia that can accommodate the Triple-E Class vessels.85-pct of the investment is by CICT and the remaining 15-pct has been funded by the by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority.

International Assistance Force In Mali Transformed into UN Force
On 1 July A new United Nations peacekeeping mission for insurgent-affected Mali was launched on 1 July .The previous African-led International Support Mission in Mali (AFISMA) has been transformed to the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA).The transfer of authority from the forces of the African-led International Support Mission in Mali (AFISMA) to the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) took place during a ceremony in Bamako, capital of the West African country.

Pakistan – China Signed 8 Agreements
On 5 July Pakistan and China signed eight documents of cooperation in various areas of economy , for furthering already strong economic and technical ties between two friendly countries.The first pact signed pertained to the building of a long term project (Pak-China Economic Corridor) a 200KM tunnel which will be built at a cost of $18 billion.These agreements and MoU were signed in the presence of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Chinese Premier Li Keqaing.Federal Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal signed the pact from the Pakistani side while Chairman National Development and Reforms Commission of PRC, Xu Shao Shi inked the pact from the Chinese side.

Hazem El-Beblawi Named As New Egyptian Prime Minister
On 9 July Hazem el Beblawi a liberal economist and Egypt s former finance minister was named as the new Prime Minister of Egypt by the Interim President Adly Mansour.El-Beblawi is a founding member of the Egyptian Social Democratic Party, Al Ahram.He has also served as the undersecretary-general at the United Nations between 1995 and 2000.

Maryland became the First southern US state to Abolish Death Penalty

Maryland, the U.S. state located in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States, on 2 May 2013 became the first southern US state to abolish the death penalty.The measure on it was signed by Democratic Governor Martin O’Malley on 2 May 2013.The person who was attended was former Maryland death row inmate Kirk Bloodsworth.He will be the first person in the country freed from death penalty because of DNA evidence after being convicted in a death penalty case.On the global level, Maryland is the 18th state to abolish the death penalty.

UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) Released Somalia Famine Conditions Report

On 3 May According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) study report, nearly 260,000 people died during the famine that hit Somalia from 2010 to 2012.Half of them were children under the age of five.The number of deaths was higher than the estimated 220,000 people who died during the 1992 famine.An estimated 4.6% of the total population and 10% of children under five died in southern and central Somalia.In Lower Shabelle, 18% of children under five died and in Mogadishu 17%.Somalia was worst hit by the extreme drought in 2011 that affected more than 13 million people across the Horn of Africa.Tens of thousands of people fled their homes in search of food.

China, Russia, Pakistan discuss Afghanistan situation

Officials from China, Russia and Pakistan on 3 April 2013 held talks on the issue of coordination between their positions on Afghanistan.The officials from three nations  backed  the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) that is grouping to play a great role in Afghanistan after the withdrawal of NATO Forces in 2014. These talks were held to enhance coordination. The talks followed a similar meeting India, China and Russia held in Moscow recently, reflecting the delicate balancing act — and increasingly complicated regional dynamics — as different countries look to push their interests in the lead up to 2014.

Malaysia PM Dissolves Parliament

UN Imposed New Sanctions on North Korea

On 7 March The UN Security Council approved a new regimen of sanctions against North Korea for conducting an underground nuclear test recently, imposing penalties on North Korean banking, travel and trade in a unanimous vote that reflected the country’s increased international isolation. The resolution, which was drafted by the United States and China, was passed in a speedy vote hours after North Korea threatened for the first time to launch a pre-emptive nuclear strike against the United States and South Korea.

Obama Signed ‘ Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act 2013 ‘

On 8 March the US President, Barack Obama signed the reauthorization of the ‘Violence Against Women Act 2013′ on the eve of International Women’s Day. Pakistani Supreme Court Orders Arrest of Prime Minister

On 15 January 2013 Pakistan’s Supreme Court ordered the arrest of the prime minister in connection with a corruption case linked to power projects. The Supreme Court gave authorities 24 hours to arrest Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf and 16 others.This is the first in the history of Pakistan to arrest a Prime Minister. The orders of the Court came following the allegations in connection with a corruption case linked to power projects, done during his office of the Water and Power Minister.

Obama Signed 23 Executive Orders on Gun Safety

On 16 January President Barack Obama announced 23 executive actions on gun control laws, making them stricter,which would come into effect immediately after his signatures. One of these measures include requiring the target shooters to keep their guns locked and also to ban military-style assault weapons, high capacity magazine as well as to make the background check mandatory.Obama announced that this was his attempt to keep children safe, keeping in view the massacre of Newtown where 20 first grade children along with six adults were killed.
