INS Vikrant marks the end of the first
phase of its construction on 12/08/2013. India launches first indigenous aircraft
carrier INS Vikrant. It is set to go for extensive trials in 2016 before being inducted into
the Navy by 2018 end.

- Nearly 90% of INS Vikrant's hull has been built indigenously with DRDO and SAIL supplying high quality steel.
- Other nations capable of designing and building a ship of equivalent size are the US, the UK, Russia and France.
What it can carry?
Carrying capacity- 37500
tonnes or carry 36 fighter planes. The flight deck of IAC will have the capacity to
hold 19 aircraft and the hangar inside will have room for 17 fighters.
Fighter aircraft - Mig-29K, Light Combat Aircraft
and Kamov-31 helicopters - will deployed on board the carrier which will also
carry an array of other weapons systems.
he time interval between the take-offs of two
fighters from the ship can be as low as three minutes and can be reduced to
less than two minutes.

by: Defence minister AK Antony's wife Elizabeth launched the 37,500-tonne
carrier at Kochi shipyard almost four-and-a-half years after its keel was laid
by the minister.

India unveiled the 6,000-tonne INS Arihant - Nuclear Submarine - Destroyer of Enemies - in 2009 as part of a project
to built five such vessels which would be armed with nuclear-tipped missiles
and torpedoes.
India will get the refurbished 44,570-tonne Admiral Gorshkov or Vikramaditya,
undergoing a refit at the Sevmash Shipyard in North Russia, later this year,
2013.
India currently has one aircraft carrier - a
60-year-old British vessel acquired by India in 1987 and renamed INS Viraat.
