(World Geography for objective general knowledge, current general knowledge, online general knowledge quiz questions, Indian general knowledge)

VOLCANOES
Volcano is an opening or vent through which magma, molten rock, ash, and volatile erupt on to the Earth's surface. It is conduit or pipe which rises from below the crust and vents to surface of the Earth. Volcanoes tend to be conical in shape but can have a variety of forms, depending on the nature of the erupted material (particularly its viscosity), the character of recent eruptive activity, and the extent of post-erupted modification by erosion. Most of the volcanoes are concentrated at convergent and divergent plate boundaries but others, located in the interior of plates, are associated with hot spots.

It is still used to move goods and people because the roads in China are very rough and bumpy. Most canals, like Suez and Panama, were built to shorten journeys for shipping. Another canal that shortens a sea journey is the Kiel canal in Germany. The journey from the North Sea to the Baltic was cut from 480km. to just 98km., when it opened in 1895.

Gupta Empire - Rise & Decline, Political Chronology, Provincial & Local Administration

(Covers the topics of history of Gupta empire, ancient period of Indian history, art and architecture of Gupta empire, Gupta empire art and architecture , Gupta dynasty)
THE BACKGROUND TO THE RISE OF THE GUPTA EMPIRE in Ancient Indian History
The Satavahanas remained a prominent power in northern Deccan (Andhra region) for more than three centuries (first century BC to the year 220 AD). They acted as a stabilizing factor in the Deccan. They gave political unity and economic prosperity to Southern India. In the  North the Kushanas emerged as a big political power. Under Kanishka the Kushana empire had reached its peak. He was a great conqueror and a patron of Buddhism. The Satavahana and the Kushana empires came to an end in the middle of the third century AD.
The rise of the Guptas to power was an event of great significance. The Gupta empire once more brought unity and peace over nearly the whole of northern India. It was far less extensive than the Mauryan empire, but was more steady and more enduring.
The origin of the Guptas in Indian History is shrouded in mystery. The founder of the Gupta dynasty was Srigupta, who probably was only a minor chief. He was followed by his son Ghatotkachagupta. He was styled Maharaja, but we do not know much about him. After Ghatotkacha¬gupta, Chandragupta I came to the throne.

What is timber extraction & types of Timber Extraction?

What is Timber Extraction?
Wood used for engineering purposes like building houses, making furniture is called timber . The products derived from limber have been important to many civilizations, and thus it has acquired value within these civilizations. There has always existed a powerful incentive for individuals to capture the wood value of old growth timber.
Timber extraction results in deforestation and in the fragmentation of the last remaining forests. It harms valuable species of trees, birds and wild animals. In spite of this, it is sometimes necessary to extract timber, so as to meet the needs of a developing country. During the extraction of timber, cutting, felling and handling should be done selectively, carefully and in a planned manner, in order to save the remaining forests and biodiversity.

Mauna Loa or Tamu Massif - which is the largest Volcano????

Scientists studying the ocean floor were shocked when they stumbled upon what they believe is the world's largest volcano. A megavolcano found at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean is being reported as the largest single volcano on Earth.
Tamu Massif, as the megavolcano is called, may be as voluminous as Olympus Mons on Mars, which is regarded as the Solar System’s largest known volcano.

The site was believed to be made up several different volcanoes but now scientists discovered it is in fact one huge supervolcano that erupted some 145 million years ago as huge amounts of magma flowed onto the ocean floor at a point where three microplates of Earth’s crust meet.

  • The 400-mile wide Tamu Massif volcano sits 1,000 miles east of Japan
  • It was originally believed to be part of the Shatsky Rise plate

INS Arihant -first nuclear submarine of ATV Project started in 1974

The 'Arihant' India's first indigenous nuclear submarine was launched on July 26, 2009, and after 4 years the reactor reached Criticality in August 2013. ( What is Criticality?)
  • Type - Nuclear Submarine.
  • It will however take another two years of trials for the 6,000-tonne submarine to finally become operational and ready to be deployed.
  • Once operational, the submarine will provide India the third leg of its nuclear triad — the capacity to fire nuclear weapons from land, sea and air. The army has nuclear capable Agni and Prithvi-II missiles in its arsenal and the air force has aircraft capable of delivering nuclear warheads.
  • With this, India becomes the sixth nation in the world to have the capability to design and construct a nuclear submarine and the only country in the Indian Ocean region to have a nuclear submarine.
