Salankayana Dynasty - Andhra History

  • Salankayana means ‘Vrishabam’ (holy bull). (Appsc Group 2-2011) & name derived from Gothra name. They were the feudatories of Ikshvakus.
  • Capital City : Vengi/Eluru (West Godavari of Andhra Pradesh).
  • Period: Ruled from 300 to 440 AD.
  • Caste: Brahmins (belief).
  • Symbol of Salankayana: Vrishabam
  • Salankayana greatly patronized Shaivism. (Appsc Group 2-2011).  The Word Salankayana indicates Nandi, the bull of Shiva.
  • 4 coins belong to them found at Ghantasala.
  • Information is available from 10 dhanashasana’s issued by them.
  • According to this inscriptions,
  • They called them as progenitors of Vishwamitra.
  • They called them as Bappa battaraka Pada battaraka.
  • Worshiper of foot of father and fore fathers.
  • Worshiper of Chitra Ratha Swamy.
  • A god in chariot – Sun god.
  • In Ptolemy’s opinion, the people called “salankaini” are located to the west of the river Godavari.

Hasti Varma
  1. Established independent kingdom. His inscription was found at Peddavegi.
  2. Defeated by Samudra Gupta. Hasti Varma, contemporary of Samudra Gupta dynasty.
  3. In Allahabad prasati inscription of Samudragupta he was mentioned as VAINGEYAKA (lord of vengi).
  4. Tittles:     Aneka Samaravapta vijaya (Peddavegi inscription)
  5. Prakara vijayasya (Guntapalli inscription)
  6. Samaramukha nirmata karma (Kanukollu inscription)
  7. Dharma maharaja (Guntapalli inscription)
  8. From the above tittles it is known that he expanded the kingdom by defeating Ikshavaku samanthas
Nandi Varma-1
  1. Son of Hasti varma.
  2. Issued kanukollu inscription (prakrit).
  3. Tittles:     Vivida Dharma Pradanasya (peddavegi inscription)
  4. Arjitha Dharmasya, Gosahasra Pradayi (guntapalli inscription)
  5. Swaprathanihithavarma (kanakollu inscription)
Vijaya Deva Varma
  1. His inscription was found at Eluru (in prakrit), issued in 13th regnal year.
  2. He performed Ashwamedha Yaga.
  3. Tittle Parama maheshswara.
Vijaya Nandi Varma
  1. Last king of Salankayana Dynasty
  2. Issued Guntapalli inscription.
  3. Built a vihara for aparashaila sect of Buddhist.
In the late 5th century, the Salankayanas were conquered by Madhavarma II of the Vishnukundis
